Monday, Saints Marie de la Mer, the Camargue

Travelling again and once more on the pay as you go motorway. The countryside changed as we left the mountains behind us, and we entered the land of the grape again. We had to queue to leave the peage, at the toll area. Almost half the toll booths were closed and one even put up a closed sign while it still had a long tail back of traffic. All those in that queue tried to get into everyone else's queue, some going left, some right, and some ignored the closed sign on the lane and tried to get under, over or through the barrier anyway. The French in the other queues indicated their displeasure in the usual way. The really bad thing was, that an ambulance with its siren going arrived and had to join a queue, even though there were masses of empty toll lanes. No one came to let them through an empty-lane barrier. If I'd been the ambulance driver I'd have barged through regardless.
We arrived at the campsite in the late afternoon, it was very hot so we found a place under a tree. We had a walk round, found the bakery on site and I mentally booked an almond pastry for tomorrow, Chris eyed up the croissants for breakfast. We walked to the sea; campers have a key to get onto the beach direct from the site, but the gate was open anyway. It was great to see the sea, the Mediterranean (for any reader who is geographically challenged) with a refreshing breeze to cool us. We walked along a bit then struck inland towards the marshes to see what birds there might be, and lo, what did we see ...... Flamingos, the genuine thing, not your Slimbridge pretend ones but real wild ones. Loads and loads and loads. The egrets and the large flocks of ringed plovers and the terns didn't get a look in. Lovely. Supper was salad and cheese. Just right.
Wifi has been difficult at the last site and at this one we have to go to reception to get it so that is where we are going now.
