Sunday, Alet-les-Bains to Gorges Galamus

A day out from the site today. We had received a recommendation from a Madame from Northern France, holidaying here for a fortnight for her second year. She said that if she had only two days, as we had, then she would, without doubt, see the Gorges Galamus; astonishing, they had given her the greatest pleasure. And only an hour away. Pouquoi pas? Why not indeed. Readers, we went there. After a brief skirmish with Satnav Snooper, on a journey through ravishing countryside, we found the gorges. Not suitable for motor caravans, so we parked at the village before and transferred to the bikes. Probably one of the best and most dramatic bike rides we have experienced, although Glen Etive is right up there too. Absolutely gorgeous, a gorge to remember. The bright sunshine meant the light was great for photography as you will see, or have seen, from the pictures. I would not have liked to have been driving a car through, and quite a few passed us, going both ways. We saw some narrow squeaks. At the foot of the gorge, under the towering wooded valley sides, flowed a clear stream or river, with fish. We later saw a small group of children dressed in wetsuits and helmets, with a couple of adults, canyoning down through the water and over the rocks. It looked like good fun.
Picnic lunch at the end of the gorge and an ice cream each, then we cycled slowly back admiring the view from the other direction.
We returned to Alet-les-Bains through classic Cathar mountain country, peering up at high rocky peaks towering over the fields and surrounding villages, with impregnable stone castles perched improbably on the ridges. Stopping every time we could for pictures. We had supper then a farewell walk around the town, a most romantic and picturesque little town in the Pays de La Haute Vallee de L'Aude.
Good site too except for you had to provide your own loo roll and soap, in the ladies and the gents. Oh, and wifi, for the first time, was an absolute pain.
