until it was purchased by the town in the last century and renovations began. There are good collections of china, furniture, wall hangings and pictures. We had a beer and a sparkling water, equally priced, and left the Chateau for the Jardin des Plantes, a small and restful garden with a wonderful herb planted walk, full with butterflies and also a hummingbird hawk moth. We had lunch on the riverbank, watching the fishermen and the water birds.
Wednesday in Saumur
More sunshine today, misty at the start of the day and warming up quickly during the morning. We had pain au raisin for breakfast, with coffee, and then walked into Saumur along the footpath by the river. We explored for a while, heading in the general direction of the chateau, passing a plaque for William Penn, who studied here for a couple of years when he was a young man. The Chateau was very interesting, and being high above the river, gave wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. We looked at an exhibition related to horses, Saumur being very famous for its high standards of horses and horsemanship. The Chateau had become more or less derelict
