We are now in Aragon, having left Castilla y Leon this morning and travelled some wild and interesting roads meantime. The smaller roads were dramatic in places, high up in the hills, but were all like driving through a garden, with flowering plants and shrubs on all sides. The lavender smelled wonderful and the poppies in masses along the roadside were lovely.
We saw a few new birds too, the most surprising was the golden oriole that flew from a roadside tree and into another, not far away. We pulled up and tracked it for a little while and got good views. Another surprise was the flock of bee-eaters that entertained us when we took a short break from driving. We also got an excellent view of a pair of hoopoes, long awaited. And then,
later, a pair of red legged partridges got up by the van as we passed.
The site is very quiet with so far only four lots of people, two French, us, two Dutch and another single man with a bike and a small tent who is probably also Dutch, because he is now sitting with the Dutch couple talking the same language. It is a big site, so it feels almost deserted. For a shop, we shall have to go to the village a kilometre away, which we will do tomorrow. Apparently we are having some rest and recuperation time for the next two days. We have been busy so it will do us good.
