Saturday, Fuentes Blancas, Burgos.

Once again we left a grey valley with glimpses of mountains and moved into blue skies and sunshine.

A very nice drive 100 miles south east. We took the scary road again but less scary second time round. This is what we should have seen yesterday....

Up and down and round multiple hairpins till eventually we left the Picos behind and headed to flatter country.

Settled into a fairly busy city site but amongst trees with little traffic noise.
We took a short walk down to the river path and amongst tall grass. Found masses of bee orchids! When I think of the years when we searched Edge Common for bee orchids.......

Good birds included storks, red backed shrike, harriers and this raptor.

The city site is busy with visitors from France, Holland and the UK, as well as from Spain. It is next to a large woodland park next to the river Arlanzon which runs through Burgos. The woods are newly in leaf and are full of birdsong. Primarily, nightingale song. Several nightingales sang out at intervals as we walked through the wood (where the bee orchids were) and continued singing till late. Our pitch is next to the woods so we had front row seats.
We plan to use bicycles today for exploring Burgos. There seems to be a network of cycle paths, including one that will allow us to get right to the centre, to the Cathedral, which is one of the main things that we want to see today.
